Ask any adult to wash their hands, and they will do it without a second thought. But that single instruction is not one behavior. It is at least ten of them, performed in a specific order, each one triggered by the last. Turn on the water. Adjust the temperature. Wet hands. Reach for soap. Pump once. Scrub palms. Scrub the backs of hands. Rinse. Turn off the water. Dry.
Most people never notice the sequence because it became automatic years ago. For an autistic child who is still learning, though, "go wash your hands" is not a simple request. It is ten requests delivered at once, with no map showing where to start.
This is the gap that shaping and chaining in ABA therapy are designed to close. These two procedures take skills that look like a single action and rebuild them as a series of small, teachable pieces. One piece at a time, with the right support and the right reinforcement, those pieces become a skill the learner owns.

Instead of waiting for a child to produce a perfect response before offering any reinforcement, shaping rewards progress toward it. Each time the learner reliably hits the current standard, the standard moves slightly closer to the target.
Shaping is the right tool when the goal behavior does not exist yet in the learner's repertoire, or when it exists but not at the quality, volume, or duration you need. There is no sequence of steps to teach because the skill is one continuous action. What changes is the form of that action.
How Successive Approximations Work
A behavior analyst designing a shaping program works through four questions:
- What is the terminal behavior? This must be specific and observable. "Better communication" is not a terminal behavior. "Says the word ball at a volume audible from three feet away" is.
- What can the learner do right now? Shaping always begins with something the learner already does, even if it looks nothing like the goal.
- What counts as an improvement? The next approximation has to be close enough that the learner can reach it, but different enough that it represents real progress.
- When does the criterion move? Too fast and the learner loses access to reinforcement and gives up. Too slow and the current approximation becomes a habit that is hard to move past.
That fourth question is where clinical judgment matters most. In our Virginia sessions, we have found that the most common reason a shaping program stalls is not that the child cannot progress. It is that the criterion was raised before the previous approximation was solid, and the learner had nothing stable to build on.
A Shaping Example: Building Toward a Spoken Word
Consider a child who wants a ball but has no way to ask for it. Right now, the child reaches toward the shelf and vocalizes an undifferentiated sound.
- A shaping program might move through something like this:
- Reinforce any vocalization while reaching toward the ball
- Reinforce only vocalizations that include a "b" sound
- Reinforce only "buh"
- Reinforce only "ba"
- Reinforce only "bah-uh"
- Reinforce only "ball"
Nothing here is skipped or forced. The child is doing the work at every stage, and every stage earns the actual ball, which is the reinforcer that matters most. The word is not being drilled in isolation. It is being built inside the moment where it is genuinely useful.
Shaping applies just as well to dimensions other than form:
- Duration: sitting at a table for 15 seconds, then 45, then two minutes
- Latency: responding to a name within eight seconds, then five, then two
- Force or precision: pressing hard enough on a pencil to leave a visible line, then writing within a wide boundary, then within a narrower one
- Tolerance: allowing a toothbrush near the face, then touching a tooth, then brushing for a few seconds
What Is Chaining in ABA Therapy?
Chaining teaches a behavior chain: a sequence of discrete steps performed in a fixed order, where completing each step signals that it is time to begin the next.
The difference from shaping is worth stating plainly. Shaping refines one behavior until it looks right. Chaining connects several behaviors that the learner may already be able to perform individually, so that they happen in the correct order without external direction.
Chaining is the standard approach for daily living skills, classroom routines, hygiene, dressing, meal preparation, and any multi-step task where independence is the goal.
Task Analysis: The Foundation of Every Chain
You cannot teach a chain you have not mapped. That map is called a task analysis, and it breaks a complex skill into a sequence of smaller observable steps.
There are four recognized ways to build one. A clinician can observe someone who performs the skill competently and document what they do. They can consult experts or published protocols. They can perform the task themselves and record each step as it happens. Or they can work backward from the learner's current performance to identify where the sequence breaks down.
The number of steps is not fixed. A handwashing task analysis might have eight steps for one learner and sixteen for another, and neither version is wrong. Step size depends on the learner's motor skills, attention, processing, and existing repertoire. A learner who struggles with the fine motor demands of a soap pump needs that action broken out on its own. A learner who already pumps soap easily does not.
This is one of the clearest reasons individualized programming matters. A task analysis copied from a template will almost always be wrong for the specific child in front of you.
Forward Chaining
In forward chaining, the learner is taught step one to mastery while the instructor completes the remaining steps. Once step one is independent, step two is added. Then step three, and so on until the full sequence is independent.
The advantage is logical: the learner experiences the task in its natural order from the beginning and learns the sequence as a sequence.
The trade-off is that the learner does not reach the natural payoff of the task, clean hands or a made sandwich, through their own effort for quite a while. That means reinforcement has to be delivered deliberately at the end of the taught step, not left to the natural outcome.
Backward Chaining
Backward chaining flips the order. The instructor completes every step except the last, and the learner performs the final step. Once that step is independent, the learner performs the last two steps. Then the last three.
The advantage here is motivational. The learner completes the task and immediately contacts the natural reinforcer built into the outcome. Pulling on the last sock means being dressed. Drying the last hand means being finished. That built-in payoff can make a real difference for learners who lose interest partway through longer routines.
Backward chaining is often the better first choice for self-care tasks where finishing is inherently satisfying.
Total Task Chaining
In total task chaining, the learner attempts every step of the sequence in every session, with prompting provided only on the steps that need it. Support is faded step by step as each one becomes independent.
This works well when the learner can already perform many of the steps, when the routine is short, or when interrupting the flow of the task would be disruptive. It also keeps the routine intact, which matters for learners who find partial completion confusing or frustrating.
The Handwashing Chain: One Task, Three Approaches
Here is a workable task analysis for handwashing:
- Walk to the sink
- Turn on the cold tap
- Turn on the hot tap
- Test the water temperature
- Place both hands under the water
- Pump soap once into one palm
- Rub palms together
- Rub the back of each hand
- Rub between the fingers
- Rinse both hands under the water
- Turn off both taps
- Take a towel
- Dry both hands
- Put the towel away
Now apply each chaining method to the same list.
Forward chaining: The learner walks to the sink independently. The therapist does steps 2 through 14. Once walking to the sink is reliable across several sessions, the learner also turns on the cold tap. The chain grows from the front.
Backward chaining: The therapist does steps 1 through 13. The learner puts the towel away. Once that is independent, the learner dries their hands and puts the towel away. The chain grows from the back, and the learner ends every session with a completed task.
Total task chaining: The learner attempts all 14 steps every time. The therapist provides a light physical prompt on step 4, which is the one this learner finds hardest, and a gestural prompt on step 9. Everything else, the learner does alone. Over time, both prompts fade out.
We have worked with families where the child could rinse and dry with no difficulty but consistently skipped soap. A total task approach was the fastest route there, because the skill was almost complete. We have also worked with children for whom the entire routine was new, and backward chaining gave them a reason to stay engaged with a task that otherwise offered no visible finish line. The method follows the learner, not the other way around.
Shaping vs. Chaining: How to Tell Which One a Skill Needs
The question to ask is whether the skill is one behavior that needs refining or several behaviors that need connecting.
Choose shaping when:
- The target behavior does not yet occur in any recognizable form
- The behavior occurs but is too brief, too quiet, too imprecise, or too inconsistent
- There is no meaningful way to break the action into discrete ordered steps
- You are working on duration, volume, accuracy, or tolerance
Choose chaining when:
- The skill is clearly a sequence with a beginning and an end
- The learner can perform some or all of the component steps in isolation
- The problem is order, initiation, or completion rather than form
- Independence in a routine is the goa
Plenty of real goals need both. Handwriting is a good example. Forming the letters legibly is a shaping problem. Getting out the notebook, opening it to the right page, picking up the pencil, writing, and putting materials away is a chaining problem. A well-built ABA program addresses both without confusing one for the other.
Prompting and Fading: The Support Behind Both Procedures
Neither shaping nor chaining works without a deliberate plan for how support is given and, more importantly, how it is removed.
Prompts generally fall along a hierarchy from most to least intrusive:
- Full physical guidance
- Partial physical guidance
- Modeling the action
- Gestural cues such as pointing
- Verbal instruction
- Visual supports such as a picture sequence posted at the sink
- Independent performance
A most-to-least approach starts with heavy support and reduces it, which limits errors early and suits learners who are new to a skill or who become frustrated by mistakes. A least-to-most approach starts with minimal support and adds only what is needed, which suits learners who are close to independence.
The risk that both approaches share is prompt dependency, where the learner waits for the cue rather than initiating on their own. In practice, this often shows up as a child who can complete every step of a routine but never starts one. That is a signal to review the fading plan, not to add more prompts.
How These Procedures Look Across Different Settings
The same procedures show up differently depending on where the teaching happens, which is why setting matters as much as method.
In early intervention, shaping tends to dominate. Young children are often building foundational communication and play behaviors that do not exist yet in any form, and there is no sequence to chain until there are behaviors to connect.
In in-home ABA therapy, chaining comes into its own. Daily living skills are taught in the room where they actually happen, using the family's own sink, the family's own soap, and the family's own routine. That removes the generalization gap before it opens.
In a clinic setting, the controlled environment allows for intensive practice with fewer distractions, which is useful during the early acquisition phase of a difficult chain. Skills are then deliberately practiced in more varied conditions.
In school-based ABA therapy, chaining supports the routines that determine whether a student can participate independently: unpacking a bag, transitioning between activities, following a multi-step classroom direction, managing lunch.
Parent training is often the piece that determines whether any of it holds. A chain practiced twice a week in session and never at home will take far longer to master than one reinforced consistently across the day.
A summer program can be a useful window for both, since the break in the school calendar creates room for concentrated work on skills that are hard to fit into a term-time schedule.
What Families Can Do to Strengthen a Chain at Home
Families are not expected to run formal programs. But a few things make a measurable difference:
- Use the same step order every time. If the task analysis says soap before water, keep it that way across everyone who helps. Varying the order resets the learning.
- Keep materials consistent. A different soap dispenser can genuinely disrupt a chain that is still forming.
- Reinforce the current step, not the final goal. If your child is working on step three, praise step three. Waiting for the whole routine to be perfect means reinforcing nothing.
- Resist finishing it for them. Stepping in to complete a step the child is close to managing is the fastest way to build prompt dependency.
- Allow more time than feels comfortable. A learner who is mid-chain needs processing time. Silence is often the most useful prompt available.
- Ask your BCBA for the written task analysis. Post it where the skill happens. Everyone in the household should be teaching the same sequence.
Common Missteps That Slow Progress
Steps that are too large. If a learner repeatedly fails one step, the step is usually the problem, not the learner. Break it down further.
- Moving the criterion too quickly during shaping. Progress that outpaces the learner's stability leads to regression.
- Inconsistent reinforcement. If a step earns reinforcement sometimes and not others, the learner has no clear signal about what is working.
- Prompting from the front. Standing directly in front of a learner and physically guiding them often creates a cue the learner then depends on. Guiding from behind or beside is usually easier to fade.
- Not collecting data. Without step-level data, there is no way to know whether the chain is progressing, which specific step is stuck, or whether a change in method is warranted.
- Teaching the chain in only one place. A routine mastered exclusively in a therapy room may not transfer. Generalization has to be planned for, not assumed.
