Is Autism More Common in Boys than Girls?

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) affects individuals across genders, but studies consistently show that boys are diagnosed at a much higher rate than girls, roughly 3 to 4 times more often. For example, CDC data indicates a prevalence of about 49 per 1,000 boys compared to 14 per 1,000 girls.

Why the Difference?

  • Biological factors: Genetics may play a role, with research suggesting a “female protective effect,” meaning girls may require a stronger genetic predisposition before developing autism.

  • Diagnostic bias: Girls often present autism differently, with symptoms that can be masked by social coping strategies. This leads to later or missed diagnoses compared to boys.

  • Awareness gap: Historically, diagnostic criteria were based on male presentations of autism, making it harder to identify ASD in girls.

What This Means for Families

Parents, educators, and professionals should be aware that autism in girls may look different and can be overlooked. Early recognition and intervention are key to ensuring children receive the support they need, regardless of gender.
