What’s the Difference Between High-Functioning Autism and Asperger’s?

For many families, the terms high-functioning autism and Asperger’s can be confusing. Historically, Asperger’s was considered a separate diagnosis, describing individuals on the autism spectrum with average to above-average intelligence and fewer language delays. However, in 2013, the DSM-5 reclassified Asperger’s under the broader category of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

Today, “high-functioning autism is often used informally to describe individuals with ASD who need less support in daily life. While both groups may share strengths in focus, memory, or unique interests, they can also face challenges with social communication, flexibility, and sensory sensitivities. The key difference lies in terminology: Asperger’s is no longer a formal diagnosis, while high-functioning autism is a descriptive phrase rather than a clinical category.

At Career Based Solutions, we help families make these distinctions with clarity and compassion. ABA therapy in Fredericksburg, and Virginia, are individualized to build communication, independence, and confidence, no matter where your child falls on the spectrum.
